In Palau, Taking the Bait to Swim With Jellyfish

24JELLYFISHsub-superJumbo

Given the opportunity, who wouldn’t jump into a lake packed with millions of jellyfish — if, of course, you knew they could not sting you?

For me, it was a no brainer. I was visiting the Pacific archipelago nation of Palau, writing for The New York Times Magazine about the country’s marine conservation efforts. And during a day off between sea patrols with the Palauan marine police, I saw an opportunity to visit one of the country’s crown jewels: Jellyfish Lake, a roughly 12-acre body of saltwater on an uninhabited islet in Palau’s Rock Islands.

The experience was nothing short of surreal. Slipping into the fluorescent green, bath-warm water, I was quickly engulfed by an overwhelming number of ominous pulsating orange blobs, which ranged in size from bowling balls to Ping-Pong balls. My first sensation was pure dread. Instinctively I expected the golden jellyfish to sting me, even though I had been repeatedly reassured they would not. Still,

In the Bahamas, Scuba Diving With James Bond’s Trainer

24BAHAMAS3SUB2-master675

I taught Sean Connery to scuba dive,” Stuart Cove said with an impish grin. “And I’ve got to be honest: He was petrified.”

Mr. Cove is the owner of Stuart Cove’s Nassau Bahamas Aqua Adventures, a dive shop and movie production company on the island of New Providence. I was sitting in his office chugging coffee in preparation for the long and challenging day ahead.

“There I was in shallow water with James Bond, for God’s sake,” he said. “And he was hanging on to me like his life depended on it. Don’t get me wrong. Sean’s a lovely guy — and a great actor — but a total wimp when it comes to diving.”  This news came as a huge relief to me. After all, if Mr. Connery, who was training for the movie “Never Say Never Again,” was scuba shy, surely I had a right to be. I had come to the Bahamas to try my hand at wreck diving and, in

Parents in Tow, Finding a Charming and Cheap Corner of Panama

21frugal-panama-parents-master675

The first Panamanian I met promptly handed me a baby.

It was a logical move, from her perspective. She was the lone person working a bamboo-walled roadside stand halfway between Tocumen International Airport and the sunbaked Azuero Peninsula. I had parked our rental car, told my parents to wait, and run in to order a cantaloupe milkshake. And, of course, you can’t cut melon, scoop ice and operate a blender while holding a little girl.

But for a visitor just off a five-hour nonstop from New York, it was a bewilderingly tender moment.

“Me permite?” she asked with utter nonchalance, then handed me the 4month-old with scrunched up lips and golden stud earrings. “Her name is Hannah,” she continued in the choppy Caribbean-style Spanish of the country. “Like Hannah Montana.”  Hannah was perfectly calm, as if she had been handed to scruffy, gray-bearded foreigners a thousand times before. A few minutes later, I handed her back, along with $2.50

Useful Solution for Visiting Executives

I ran into quite the quandary lately at work. I’m in transportation services at my firm and was called upon to provide a quick solution when a group of executives in town to visit the company suddenly ran into a problem in getting back to the airport. All of our fleet vehicles were out on various assignments so I had no way to get them back to the airport to they could catch their flight. In desperation I searched view our party bus limos online and found a local company who could provide a solution.

The idea of sending a bunch of serious guys in suits to the airport in a party limo is not without humor. I was actually a bit worried that this solution might come off as mocking. But I had a problem and needed to act quickly. Missing the flight out was not an option. Moreover, a missed flight would mean putting these guys up in an expensive hotel with meals and all the other stuff that comes with it. Read more

American Airlines and LATAM Airlines Group are seeking regulatory approval to enter into a joint business agreement that could potentially add more direct service routes between North and South America and more scheduled flights on existing routes. If the deal is approved, the airlines, already part of the Oneworld alliance and operating with a code-share agreement, could work together to schedule, sell and share revenue on flights between the United States and Canada and six South American countries: Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay. American has joint business arrangements with several partners, including British Airways, between North America and Europe, and Japan Airlines on Pacific routes.

After Attack in Turkey, Concerns About Tourism

Tourism in Turkey could suffer following the terrorist attack in Istanbul last week in the heart of the city’s historic district near the famous Blue Mosque. The explosion — the work of an Islamic State operative — killed 10 tourists and came just a few months after the Oct. 10 terrorist bombings in the capital city of Ankara where more than 100 people were killed.

Turkey travel specialists report that, given last year’s attacks and the country’s shared border with Syria, travelers were already skittish about visiting, and last week’s events will only compound their concerns.

Karen Fedorko Sefer, the owner of the Istanbul-based Turkey tour outfitter Sea Song Tours, said that several of her clients who have trips scheduled in the next few months have canceled. “Bookings were already slow for 2016 because of a combination of what’s going on in the region and the attacks in Paris last year, but now, I expect them to be at a standstill,” she said.

The World’s Best Places to See Wildlife

5. Rwanda, Africa

Rwanda is best known for its gruesome and brutal civil war in the 1990s that resulted in one of history’s worst cases of genocide and murder. It has taken a long time for the country to heal from its wounds and a lot of work remains to be done, but for the first time in a long while, Rwandans are beginning to see the future with optimism and hope.

Though Rwanda’s beautiful scenery and fauna is often overshadowed by its turbulent recent history, there’s no doubt that the country is one of the world’s most unique and beautiful places to view wildlife. Besides boasting a beautiful landscape, Rwanda is also home to a significant portion of the world’s surviving mountain gorillas.

Mountain Gorillas, because of their remarkable intelligence and similarity to humans, are a captivating and fascinating animal. Unfortunately, rapid industrialization and conflict have threatened the very survival of these gorillas. Less than 1,000 are estimated to remain in the wild and without a lot of help, the gorillas could soon be gone forever.

Rwanda has in recent years restructured its national park program and has begun to take advantage of

Holden Caulfield in Winter Manhattan

Holden Caulfield generates so much inspirational buzz, he needs no introduction.  This immortal character, star of The Catcher in the Rye written by J.D. Salinger, continues to flourish among high school students across the country.

Every year adolescents discover the cynicism and intelligence of Holden, a large feat from once being one of the most banned books in the United States.  The Catcher in the Rye has come a long way from being dismissed for its 252 goddamns.  Instead, it encompasses a new spirit, one of literary genius, but also of place.  Throughout the book, a reader will begin to notice that Caulfield moves swiftly throughout New York City, specifically in and around Central Park while relating memories of his sister Phoebe and his deceased brother Allie.

It was Salinger who helped set the tone for historic New York during the late 1940s to early 1950s, a difficult time in American history, falling right after World War II and pushing forward with conservative morals and postwar confusion. However, Salinger did not mention these political aspects, instead leaving his story to Holden and his daily and nightly jaunts around Manhattan, mostly Uptown.

Visiting Camogli, Portofino and the Italian Riviera

The Glamorous Portofino

East of Monte Carlo, Portofino is the place to see and be seen. Just don’t expect anyone to notice you unless you happen to pull into town on a yacht. But for those who can afford to enjoy it, Portofino is a pretty special place.

A small village hidden away on a mountainous peninsula, Portofino’s colorful buildings line its sheltered port and present one of the most picturesque scenes in all of Italy. Visitors can stroll along the waterfront to take in the views of the yachts and fishing boats in the port, or try their hand at some shopping in its many fashionable boutique shops.

One thing that should not be missed while in Portofino is the opportunity to try a champagne-infused aperitivo. This Northern Italian tradition is a type of suped-up happy hour that sees free snacks and appetizers offered to patrons as they enjoy the house’s drink specials. In Portfofino’s case, this means finger food and Bellinis.

If one must eat a meal, there’s no shortage of fine-dining options in town. Da Puny is the first stop for visiting jetsetters who have thought to book weeks

A Holiday Break to the Italian Lakes

Visiting the Alba International White Truffle Fair

Have you ever had real Italian food? Really real. Aromas that floor you at the door; rich, earthy flavors that have been cultivated for generations and heightened by the innovative craft. Welcome to Alba, where ugly little mushrooms sniffed out by trained dogs and pigs are washed off, meticulously preserved and shaved sparingly over pasta, risotto, grilled vegetables and just about everything else.

Reading Suggestion: Check out this blog post on truffle hunting to get some tips for wine pairing.

In the late Autumn harvest period of the tartufo bianco, early October to mid-November, Alba, nestled in Northern Italy in the Piedmont region, hosts the Alba International White Truffle Fair, which welcomes international chefs, gastronomy buffs, oenophiles and wayward travelers to taste the decadent, aromatic and wildly exclusive white truffle.

Right at the entrance to the fair, visitors are handed a glass – wine plays a large role in the enjoyment of this festival and of the food itself. Kiosks line the convention center at the Cortile della Maddalena, hawking jars of truffle oil, cheeses encrusted with slivers of white truffle, truffle paste and truffle butter, delicate metal truffle graters, and, of course, truffles.

Two Weeks in Australia

Begin in the southern hemisphere’s greatest colonial metropolis, Sydney

First stop, follow the example of the early colonists and drop into Sydney, built on the site of the first British settlement in Australia. It was originally established as a penal colony, but is situated in an ideal location for a city – on the hills surrounding one of the world’s largest natural harbours. This harbour is now an icon itself, framing a skyline composed of iconic structures including the Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge. The shoreline where the city meets the sea is defined by a string of famous beaches, such as Manly Beach, which is one of the world’s great casual surfing destinations. Younger travelers are likely to adore the Sydney SEALIFE Aquarium, with 12,000 animal inhabitants and exhibitions on the marine life in Sydney Harbour, in other areas around Australia’s coast, and across the southern oceans.

Party or stretch out in Australia’s east coast chill city, the Gold Coast

From Sydney, wind your way north up Australia’s east coast and – a short 900km later – you’ll reach the sun-dazzled city of the Gold Coast. This is one of Australia’s most
